Alaska by Rail

This tour is designed for enthusiasts of rail travel. From the majestic waters of Kenai Fjords National Park to Alaska's great interior region, this tour moves at a relaxed pace and includes many major Alaskan highlights. In just eight days the group will travel the entire Alaska Railroad system, cruise the Kenai's scenic shoreline, jet boat on the Talkeetna River, view wildlife in Denali National Park, and cruise on a classic sternwheeler. Local experts and on-board rail staff are the guides.

Itinerary

7 Days / 6 Nights

Day 1  Anchorage arrival; The group will transfer to their hotel by courtesy shuttle or private coach. Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 2 Anchorage to Seward (day tour); Today the group will transfer to the Anchorage Rail Depot for the journey to Seward. The train from Anchorage to Seward will take the group past Beluga Point and along Cook Inlet. The spectacular scenery  represents all that Alaska is famous for. On arrival in Seward, the group will embark on a scenic cruise into the Kenai Fjords National Park.  The cruise will take the group through Resurrection Bay to either the Aialik Glacier or the Holgate Glacier.  Guests may have the chance to witness glacier calving. As they travel through the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge guests may see Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, bald eagles, puffins, and possibly whales.  The group will return to Anchorage this evening aboard the Alaska Railroad.  Overnight in Anchorage.

Day 3 Anchorage to Talkeetna; This morning the group will travel aboard the Alaska Railroad to the quaint town of Talkeetna.  It is the most popular preparation spot for climbers of Mt McKinley.  Upon arrival in Talkeetna, the group will embark on a 2-hour tour aboard the 51-passenger Talkeetna Queen jetboat. Guests will take a 1/4 mile leisurely nature walk to visit an authentic turn of the century trapper's cabin with its rustic furnishings. The guide will display raw furs from the local area and demonstrate trapping methods. Naturalists will acquaint the guests with the wildflowers and plants that grow in abundance along Alaskan river system. Along the river the group will have the opportunity to view nesting bald eagles, beavers, moose, and possibly even bears. Overnight in Talkeetna.

Day 4 Talkeetna to Denali National Park; Late this morning the group will depart Talkeetna by rail and continue north to Denali National Park. Prior to departure, they will have the opportunity for optional tours in Talkeetna, such as flight seeing. At 6 million acres, Denali National Park is one of the world’s largest great frontiers for wilderness adventure. The park is home to North America's highest peak, Mt McKinley. Most of the visitor amenities and park services are located at the park’s entrance. Upon arrival in Denali, the group will transfer to hotel via courtesy shuttle. The afternoon is free for optional tours such as river rafting, flightseeing, and horseback riding. Overnight at Denali park entrance.

 

Day 5 Denali National Park to Fairbanks; Today's adventure includes an early morning National Park tour via bus into Denali National Park. This six to eight hour tour takes the group through the pristine wilderness of Denali, providing photo and wildlife viewing opportunities. An experienced naturalist will provide an overview of the land and its wildlife. Lunch is included on this tour. Later in the afternoon the group will travel by train to Fairbanks. Upon arrival in Fairbanks, transfer to hotel via courtesy shuttle or private coach. Overnight in Fairbanks.

 

Day 6 Fairbanks; This morning the group will take part in a Fairbanks sightseeing tour. In the afternoon the group will travel the Chena and Tanana Rivers for 3.5 hours an authentic sternwheeler riverboat. This narrated tour provides background on the area's natural history and the Athabascan Native culture. Guests will see a trapper's cabin, log homes, bush pilot performance and a dog mushing Kennel. A stop will be made at the historic site of a Chena Indian village to learn about Native Alaskan hunting and fishing techniques.  Overnight in Fairbanks.

Day 7 Departure;
A private transfer will transfer the group to the Fairbanks Airport for their departure flight home.
